SUMMARY:Turn the Page Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Join the Turn the Page Book Club to discuss Why Civil Resistance Works | The Strategic Logic of Nonviolent Conflict by Erica Chenoweth and Maria J. Stephan. The next meeting will be on November 25th from 5-6p in the Cottonwood Room (2nd Floor) at the Bozeman Public Library. \nJoin us to explore this pivotal moment in history. Through reading bold and thought-provoking books\, we’ll uncover revolutionary ideas\, challenge the status quo\, and spark the conversations that shape tomorrow. \nAbout Why Civil Resistance Works \nFor more than a century\, from 1900 to 2006\, campaigns of nonviolent resistance were more than twice as effective as their violent counterparts in achieving their stated goals. By attracting impressive support from citizens\, whose activism takes the form of protests\, boycotts\, civil disobedience\, and other forms of nonviolent noncooperation\, these efforts help separate regimes from their main sources of power and produce remarkable results\, even in Iran\, Burma\, the Philippines\, and the Palestinian Territories.\n \nPrior book selections\nBook for October: Why Fascists Fear Teachers\, by Randi Weingarten\n“Teachers are under siege not for anything they do wrong\, but for what they do right.  The title of my new book\, Why Fascists Fear Teachers\, is intended as a warning\, but it may belie what the book is at its core: a love letter to teachers. I write about teachers’ seemingly small everyday acts\, like fostering empathy\, confidence\, critical thinking and mastery\, that cultivate opportunity and humanity in our young people.” – Randi Weingarten (https://www.aft.org/column/why-fascists-fear-teachers) \nBook for September: How to Stand up to a Dictator: The Fight for Our Future is a memoir and journalistic exposé written by Maria Ressa\, a renowned Filipino-American journalist and cofounder of the news website Rappler. Ressa’s expertise stems from her decades-long career in journalism\, including her work as CNN’s bureau chief in Manila and Jakarta\, and her firsthand experience confronting authoritarianism in the Philippines. \nBook for July/August: One Day\, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This by Omar El Akkad.  From award-winning novelist and journalist Omar El Akkad comes a powerful reckoning with what it means to live in a West that betrays its fundamental values. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Huffing for Stuffing
DESCRIPTION:Huffing For Stuffing is back for the 19th year! \nHuffing For Stuffing combines community spirit with a lively race atmosphere to improve the lives of many of our community members. Since our inception in 2007\, Huffing For Stuffing has provided over half a million dollars in funding to our local food bank! The race is held each Thanksgiving morning at the Museum of the Rockies in Bozeman\, Montana. All abilities are welcome. We want you to be a part of Gallatin Valley’s favorite Thanksgiving holiday tradition! Huffing For Stuffing is presented by HRDC’s Gallatin Valley Food Bank in partnership with Big Sky Wind Drinkers. \nHRDC’s Gallatin Valley Food Bank knows nutrition is vital for everyone in our community and we work hard to act as the crucial link between food and the people who need it. Gallatin Valley Food Bank serves anyone who needs help stretching their food budget. High housing costs and underemployment continue to push people in the Gallatin Valley and in Southwest Montana towards food insecurity. \nVisit huffingforstuffing.com to register for the race and obtain important information. \nRace packet pick-up is Wednesday\, November 26th at the Community Commons Marketplace\, 206 E. Griffin. \nNot a runner but still want to join the fun? Volunteer! Click here for volunteer info.
