Quick Election Protection Update
Here’s what we’re tracking, what we know now, and what we’re watching for:
Mail-in voting: New federal USPS requirements that could affect how mail ballots are processed are currently blocked by a federal court, so Montana’s voting procedures have not changed. The Trump administration is asking the U.S. Supreme Court to allow the rules to take effect before November. For now: follow existing Montana procedures, and remember that your ballot must be received by 8 PM on Election Day—a postmark is not enough.
Voter rolls & citizenship checks: Montana has used the federal SAVE database to check voter citizenship, and questions remain about what Montana voter information MT SOS has shared with federal agencies. Federal courts have temporarily blocked expanded use of SAVE, and that issue is also headed to the Supreme Court. We’re watching closely for any renewed voter-roll reviews, challenges, or changes affecting Montana voters.
Federal election involvement: DOJ and DHS have expanded election-related monitoring and investigations in other states. We have no indication right now that federal personnel are being deployed to Gallatin County polling places, but we’re watching for federal requests or involvement in Montana and how state and local officials respond.
Bottom line: We’re seeing significant developments nationally, but nothing in these developments currently requires Gallatin County voters to change how they register or vote. We’ll alert you if that changes—and we’ll also give you an early heads-up when something develops that could plausibly affect us.
